The people who lived in the Capital when I was eleven had those same eyes.The boy running between alleys, the noblewoman with parted lips behind her fan,the swordsman lurking in the shadows. All of them, from the oldest Native tiedt o our land to the youngest immigrant arriving on our shores, shared—and still share—the same intense, weary, and determined wisdom. The wild glint in our eyes is nothing but a reflection of our struggles.

I realize this now, as I wade through my memories. During that mission in the heart of my native city, with countless dangers closing in, the eyes of my companions and those of my enemies were indeed the same. And yet, we hunted each other down with swords raised, all the way to the blazing gates of disaster.
