Every child of the Isles is born amidst the roar of thunder.

They are born to the clatter of forgotten shutters,the rumble of heavy rain, and the crash of waves against the coast. A tall pine tree, a ledge, or a piece of cliff crumbles with each painful push of the mother. Driven by a will of its own, my entire country comes together to bring forth this new soul.

Some say our women give birth in silence. That is obviously untrue. It is only after the birth and its ordeals, when cradling their newborn, that the mothers of my country fall silent. They gaze into their child’s golden eyes with a mix of tenderness and sorrow. For they have just brought into the world another wolf on a leash, bound by five centuries of servitude.

Like elsewhere, our children grow up. They can lead a quiet life, repeating the same actions each day without ever picking up a stone to hurl it at the face of fate. But, until their last breath, and without knowing why, they will remember the mighty bellow of their birth, when the mountains, the sea, and the sky worked together to bring them to life.

When I first heard that echo, I was a ten-year-old girl, chased by countless enemies on the roads of my occupied country. Cassandre often told me to write. To tell my story, our story.
